It's 10AM on Sunday morning, before the assembly, and if you've forgotten that Dirk Strider is a person who exists, then nobody could blame you, because he's been in the shower for the past two and a half hours.

Once Black dorm is completely out of hot water, he comes moseying back into 2-A, dressed in his Fortitude uniform with a towel wrapped around his hair. Feel free to complain, or, alternatively, to notice the shield symbol that is most definitely on the back of one hand even though the Players for the round haven't even been announced.

No, but if it's useful here I should learn... asl. [That's a word, right? He's definitely pronouncing it like a word and not an acronym.]

How does that make music, though? It's not like any instrument I've known.

'It's pronounced as letters. A-S-L. It's only useful when talking to me. I'm pretty much the only person here who can't talk. We used to have others who couldn't really, but they're gone now I guess.' [He hates knowing that. He hates it because it was John. And Shizune wasn't close, but she was a friend.] 'Most people don't know it since it isn't exactly wildly needed. I'm a huge minority. Easier just to text, but it looks like that isn't really going to work between us. I can teach.'

'I'm not surprised. I can teach you how to use them if you like. You mix beats and it makes purdy music.'

A-S-L. ["Acronym" isn't even a word for him, and they're pretty uncommon where he's from, but that's enough that he can take a guess.] Tell me, does that stand for words you could spell out?

'American sign language. American probably means jackshit to you though. Seriously, when someone decided to make ASL, they should have made it universal.' [Why does Britain have it's own sign language? Why couldn't it just be USL? Wouldn't that make things convenient?]

'I usually send out a text, so unless you have a PDA, it might just have to end up me dragging you along. But didn't you just buy one?'

The PDA and I have been introduced but it seems like it'd be profusely irritating to use.
