Introduction to computer programming

Summary: Alex is teaching another of his daily classes and figuring out that he's forgotten a number.

Alex stands in front of the class, awkward as usual. This is his 17th class, and he still was not comfortable in front of the class. He fumbled with the textbook, "Ah, u-um c-could you a-all go ta chapter 2? I m-mean 3. P-page 48." It actually started on page 49, but that's the facing page, so who's counting?

"So, uh, t-today's functions a-and abstractions. S-so, uh, s-see if you c-can find some sub-programs in the things we've d-done, and... uh, lemme know." While he let people look at things they've already written for sub-programs, he busied himself again with a program for the PDA he has started working on.

((OOC: if anyone is interested in where I'm getting his lessons, I'm using this course as a guide for the lessons... not that anyone has to get technical or read any of it.))

"It would bother me... I don't want you to get hurt... Neither would Becca, nor Dave or your other friends here." He looked at Alex seriously for a moment, hoping to show him how important this was.

Alex goes red at that, laughing nervously, "I g-guess! I always d-do my best ta avoid getting hurt though."

"I'm glad, they seem very good at hurting people here." The penalities, the fact they could bring pain just by willing it somehow. It made things more dangerous.

Alex frowns at that, "At least you h-have ta do somethin' ta get hurt here."

Shion frowned, "Or you get punished for other peoples mistakes..."

After all Dave had never broken a rule and got hurt on a weakly basis.

Alex sighs, "Y-yes, but even if the reason's not fair, i-it's still a reason. It c-can be predicted."

"I guess that's right... at least we have warning..." It still wasn't fair, no one should be hurt after all.

Alex catches something in Shion's expression that just reminded him of shadows of unease. He turned his head guiltily, "S-sorry. You're r-right. It's just a sore subject.

"No... you don't have to apologise," Shion felt bad and looked a little awakard, "I knew what you meant, I just don't believe anyone should be hurt... warning or not."

"No they shouldn't... But it's how they try ta k-keep us in l-line." And it worked.

"Yes, it's quite clever really... very cruel but they use the fact that most people care about their friends even if they don't care about being hurt themselves..." This was exactly why Nezumi said that you shouldn't get close to people. But Shion wasn't like Nezumi, he liked being close to people and caring about them.

"It's d-disgusting is what it is." He tisked, bearing his teeth and kicking the ground. "I'd l-love for them ta taste the feelings that they c-cause. Mikel c-could do that."

Alex had told him about Mikel's powers before, Shion nodded, "It is awful, but they have us trapped..." Even if Mikel was here his powers would be broken.

Alex smiles a bit, "So we should f-fight the system."

Fight them... like he and Nezumi had been going to fight No. 6... except then Shion had a third way a way to help everybody and here...

"I don't know... I wouldn't want to hurt them... after all the only people we know as part of the system are the staff and they were brought here just like us..."

Alex shakes his head, "No, n-not the staff or the p-people. It's a c-computer. Every p-program has exploits. If I c-can't get into the c-code, then w-we figure out h-how ta use the rules against the system itself. Win w-without fighting."

"Oh..." Shion thought about that and nodded, "That's clever, a way to stop whoever is fully behind this..."

Alex spreads his hands apart, smiling, "W-well, that's my 'thing'. I-it's what I'm g-good at. In m-my world, the're n-not a s-system I c-can't c-crack. I'll c-crack this one. I-it m-might t-take the wh-whole time I'm here, b-but I'll do it! I-I'll even b-be like Headmistress Dolorosa!" He makes a fist and pulls his elbow back in a victorious gesture. There was a fire in his eyes that he usually lacked, but talking about this brought out in spades.

Shion grinned at the fire he saw in Alex and nodded, "I will help you, in whatever way I can." Though hacking was something he had never done before in his life.

Alex smiles at Shion, "I-if I ever disappear for a f-few days, c-come f-find me w-with food an' d-drink." He could get really absorbed in what he was doing, sometimes all that reminded him about his body would be the pain he would get from not taking his pills.

Shion nodded, "I will, and if you refuse to eat I'll send Becca."

He had no doubt Becca could be terrifying when she was trying to look after you.

Alex looked a bit concerned, "N-no! I'll eat!"

"Good!" Shion grinned, glad that the joke threat had worked.
