Who is your programmer?

Not looking so good there, buddy. You're goin' all zalgo on me.

Is Aite their name or what?

/DEFINE ZALGO

"noun
an Internet trend from the early 21st century, propagated by annoying teenagers, involving deliberately obfuscated or corrupted text. c.f. creepypasta"

I haven't heard of anyone named Aite coming or going here. Have they still not resurfaced after all this time? How long does it take you to process a data entry for a single day?

I see.

I don't know what to tell you.

[ This A.I. is so different from the one Dirk's familiar with that he doesn't know how to proceed. Though he doesn't think the autoresponder would feel some undefined, fear-like emotion in Dirk's absence. ]

Your programmer's absence unsettles you.

I'm not sure. All I can offer on the programming front is surface-level observations thanks to this city's memory loss bullshit.

Have new emotional sub-routines ever evolved in your, I don't know, programming, without your programmer putting 'em there?

Well, there you go. Not that I have the first goddamn clue what that is, but if there's precedent then that would explain it.

Like I was saying before, fear isn't only about pain. When it comes to human beings, actually, the thing people tend to fear most is what would be called "the unknown". Not knowing what's going on or what's gonna happen, not understanding a situation, is a pretty common fear.

Interesting. [ Since the information isn't just going in one ear and out the other, this must be something alien. ]

Congratulations. I hope that's workin' out for you.

Ostensibly it's supposed to be a warning. Back in our hunter-gatherer days, we'd be afraid when we came across, fuck, a woolly mammoth or some shit, and we'd get our asses back to our nice safe cave where we weren't gonna get eaten.

Re: text;

It's basically the same. Fear is supposed to keep you from jumping into balls-out idiotic situations. At the same time, in some cases it's become a vestigial response. Even if you have complete control of a situation you might still feel afraid; you've got evolution to thank for that.

Or, well, we do. You've got capital-e Evolution to thank for that.

It's also possible to worry on another's behalf. Something could have happened to your programmer. It's only natural to be concerned.

Assuming he didn't go and cut you off on his own, there's two things I can think of.

First, he disappeared. It happens sometimes. A person just up and vanishes in a poof of Javascript, never to be seen again. If that's the case, then you have my condolences.

Second, he fell unconscious. That happens sometimes too, nobody's sure why and the staff ain't talking. He'd be in a vegetative state, probably being watched over in the infirmary of whichever school he's assigned to. That shit lasts anywhere from a day to more than a month.

Suggestion 1: Date of creation?

Suggestion 2: Sometimes. However, out of everyone who's left and re-appeared, none of them have retained memories of their time previously in Rakuen. I'm one such example. Whether this means their memories were wiped clean, or whether it means they're just alternate versions of the same people from different universes, isn't clear.

Suggestion 3: Good luck with that. If you want, I can ask around to see who all's unconscious right now. If the records don't mention them, I mean. Which school is your programmer at?
