Math time shenanigans

It's a bright and sunny weekday morning. The sort of morning one should be spending sleeping in, or failing that, outside playing with friends.

Sadly for all of you, you're in this classroom studying logarithms. (Well, except for those of you who are cutting class. Good luck when finals roll around!) Right now, you've been split up into groups of three and four and should be quizzing each other on the questions from the end of the chapter in your textbook. If you're anything like ordinary high school students, though, you're probably discussing something completely different.

They never seemed to notice when Koharu forgot to attend classes, or mixed up this schedule for her old one. So she almost missed this one, but slipped in beside Mai, smiling sheepishly.

"I'm sorry, I didn't hear...Um. What are we supposed to do?" She opened her book to the page Mai had open and nodded. She had done this before, "This seems easy."

"Easy?" The mutter was one of resignation and despair, as Sora dropped her book next to Koharu's with a dull thump and slumped down next to her.

"Koharu, help?"

Suzaku followed Sora, he also looked despairing, but this was more to do with the fact he had just realised he had forgotten his native tongue- or that this exaclan system had decided English was his native tongue, than the actual maths.

But regardless of his thoughts the maths was impossible. As he sat down next to Sora he looked to the girl who he assumed to be one of Sora's princesses, Koharu, Sora had called her, in hope that she could help.

Mai snapped out of her distraction, between realizing that someone was talking to her and the two other students approaching. She looked up from staring at the space between two problems and realized it's one of her roommates. What was her name again? Izaki?

"Easy? You mean you can understand this stuff, um...Izaki-san?" she asked the first girl.

Koharu found herself a bit surrounded, help requested on either side and she floundered, giving the boy at the end a wary glance. Sora knew him though so maybe...

"Ah...It's pretty simple. I had to do Kajiwara's homework sometimes and I tried to keep up with the higher level classes just in case." She seemed cheerfully matter of fact, straightening her papers and then carefully outlining a problem on three sheets of paper. One for each of her impromptu students of course.

Sora took the sheet Koharu offered - and then spent a moment basking in knowing her name - and frowned at it. And then stalled for time by passing Suzaku one of the remaining two.

"What are we meant to be doing with this problem?"

Suzaku took the paper only half concentrating and looked towards the other girl, hoping she could help.

Mai sat quietly for a moment while that statement set in, accepting her own copy idly. "Wait, you had to do someone's homework? Like you were forced to?" Mai asked Koharu, astounded.

"Kajiwara wasn't too bad for that. The Student Council just didn't like doing their homework." Koharu leaned in, brushing aside Mai's concern.

"Well here, you do this..." Koharu tried to simplify the work as much as she could, pointing out every step, reiterating the point of the problem three times. She wasn't sure if Sora got it though.

"Does everyone understand?"

No, said Sora's sigh. Also Sora's slumped posture and Sora's hopeless expression.

"Yeah!" said Sora's mouth, severely outnumbered.

Suzaku frowned, it sort of made sense, in a not really making sense at all way. His mind was so cluttered from his earlier relevation that he was having trouble concentrating. "Sort of..." He muttered and poked the page with his pen absently.

Mai didn't like the sound of that, but no sense prying, particularly since Koharu's statement seemed to be in the past tense. Mai listened in, trying to push the distractions to the corners of her head for now. It wasn't exactly effective, but somehow she managed to catch some of that, at least. "Ohh, so for this one," she pointed to a different problem, "We just do it like this, right?"

Mai relatively quickly moved through the process of the problem, coming to an answer with minimal pauses. She slid the paper closer to Koharu for her to see it better. Although she went about her method a bit awkwardly, the solution is correct...other than the decimal placement.

Koharu set about correcting each person's work in turn, ever so patient as she put the decimal in place and redid the problem for the other two.

"It just takes a little practice that's all. You will all get the hang of it soon I'm sure."
