Swans Don't Teach Music Class

Summary: Louis attempts to teach a class about music despite having forgotten how to play his own trumpet.
Warnings: May contain hideous screeching noises when Louis attempts to play his trumpet.

BEFORE CLASS
Louis was desperately trying to play his trumpet. Each time he touched it, though, a pain went through his head, and he had to withdraw. The one time he actually managed to bring it to his beak, all that came out were fairly unmusical screechings. His wings slumped. How could he teach if he couldn't even play anymore?

START OF CLASS
Louis stood in front of the classroom, trying to look stern. On the chalkboard behind him, he had written a question: "Who already knows how to play an instrument?"

[ Uh...

She lowers her hand after a minute. Why is it suddenly so quiet? ]

[mutesician]

[There is an awkward pause as Louis tries to figure out what's going on. Maybe he wrote it too small? He holds up a wing, then writes the same question on his slate, walking closer to Rose's desk and holding it so that it should be easier for her to see.]

[This is so awkward.]

No. I suppose I could try. [ he would rather like to break something right about now. ]

Forgive me, a swan. I have never met an animal that could write let alone play music. Have you been playing music for long?

[mutesician]

[He nods. Merely mentioning music in general doesn't give him a headache, at least.]

[mutesician]

[I assume there's a collection of instruments in the room.]

Which instrument have you studied the most? [It should probably be in there somewhere.]

Well, I look forward to any and all lessons you will be giving us, I know very little about music, just that I enjoy it from time to time.

[mutesician]

[He nods, then writes a bit more.]

Enjoying music is important to learning it.

[ Rustle rustle. She can definitely hear the feathers in front of her. Too late, it dawns on her that although swans may (apparently) teach music class, they probably can't talk. ]

If you're giving me visual stimulation, I'm afraid to say it's a little beyond my capabilities. [ Oh, damn. Really, communication is just the bane of her existence. ]

[ Anyway, she holds out her PDA helpfully, in case he doesn't have one. ]

[He's a bit confused. How will typing it instead of writing it help? His own PDA is back on his own desk, so he takes hers and types "What kind" on it. He...hasn't figured out how to make a question mark yet.]

But you can learn many things without enjoying them.

[Dave shows the screen of his PDA. It's strange the amount of people that require different means to communicate seem to exist in both schools.]

Shion of course had met Louis and so wasn't at all surprised that their teacher was a Swan that wrote. However music was something he knew nothing about, though the first week they had been here there had been a music teacher, but he had disappeared. His hand remained down but he listened carefully.

Louis noticed Shion, and nodded at him. He couldn't quite wave, but he tried to indicate that he recognized the person who had helped him before.

[Louis comes closer to get a better look at the PDA. Since he's a bit away from the chalkboard, he uses his own slate to write.]

You know how to play lots of kinds of instruments? [He's definitely perked up. He's definitely thinking Dave should be made a teaching assistant now.]

[Shion smiled at him and nodded back. Looking forward to the class even though it was something he had no idea about.]

[Firifale looks nervous as he raises his hand. Nope, sorry, it's not because he knows how to play an instrument.]

...Can't read? Help?

[ She hasn't either. "What kind" goes the audio function on Rose's PDA, flat and metallic. Rose breathes a small sigh of relief. ]

The violin. If that was the question.

[Oh! He starts at that. How far has human technology come? He quickly types more, disregarding caps now.]

well since i doubt turntables count as a valid instrument
which is bullshit
i used to play with a keyboard
which i guess means i can work a piano too
i sucked at the guitar so dont bother
drums are pretty boss though

[He's mostly dabbled more then play, but he was more inclined to instruments without being able to communicate vocally.]

[Louis nods through most of this. However, part of it makes him curious, so he addresses that first.]

Turntables? [I am a swan and what is this?]

welp, that was a two week intermission

Yes. [ She holds it out. She'll have to deal with radio silence for some time. ]

It's okay, my RP drive died for a while too.

[mutesician]

Thank you very much. [He's already noticed at least one other student who might need it.]

[Louis comes waddling over with Rose's communicator. He quickly types on it.]

Instrument... [He has heard that word, yes? It was... it was...]

Ah! The one with the twee-deetle-dee! [Miming some kind of woodwind there. Then, abruptly, a look of intense disdain darkens his usually bright face. He's only seen one musician before. They didn't get on.]
