Alex stood awkwardly at the front of the class, looking young enough and nervous enough that he could easily just be a lost student. He started passing out books, first to the weapons sitting in the front of the classroom, then to the rest of the class.

"W-well, I-I guess I'm supposed ta be your teacher or s-something.... I've n-never really taught before, so I guess l-let's start with the i-idea of programming. Ah, w-well, do any of you know anything about c-computer programming? I g-guess, if you don't, uh, j-just read the first chapter?"

[Alex rushes over,] N-no, no, p-please, don't do that! Wh-what's wrong? What're you having issues with?

Everything. This machine has no use to me, why is such technology important to you I got along perfectly fine without it.

[Alex smiles gently at her.] B-because, in m-my world, people don't use letters anymore, they u-use phones. E-everything's instant c-communication. N-not to mention companies, g-government, everything. A-almost everything is run on c-computers. Computers do much of the work for p-people, and if y-you are g-good at manipulating them, you c-can manipulate those c-completely dependent on them... [He's implying terrorism activism there.]

B-besides... [He turns mildly pink] s-someone like me, who's n-not g-good with people c-can make friends m-more easily online.

I do not think I like this world of you, there is nothing wrong with sending messages via birds, even if it takes time for the letter to arrive. Instant is too fast and this technology leaves too much room for meddling.

Then i-isn't it better that you're the one that knows how ta meddle? *He sighs a bit* L-like it or not, this world has computers. I think they're fun, b-but that doesn't mean I w-wouldn't like ta send letters. I u-used ta use my rat ta send messages while we were on missions!

There will always be one who is better at meddling than you, and I do not think that all of this technology is necessary in the first place, it is a horrible way to communicate.

[He frowns, getting a little angry.] It's h-horrible? Why?

It's not personal at all, you cannot see their face or hear tone.

Some people have an easier time with that!

Text is just words, they have meaning but no feelings, I would rather write a letter and arrange a meeting.

You c-can read feeling in words! H-haven't you e-ever read a poem? A b-book that makes you cry? D-don't tell me words have no feeling!

Yes but those are intended to make you feel things. If I were to send you a note that said I wish to speak with you, you would not know if I am angry or if I just wish to have a friendly conversation.

[Alex takes a breath to calm himself down.] Y-you learn. By h-how long it takes s-someone ta type, how their grammar changes, e-even typing mistakes, I c-can tell j-just how someone's feeling.

I-it's easier f-for some people t-to tell that th-then it is f-for them to tell by tone a-an' expression.
