He's unconscious.
The nurse says he'll wake up in a day or two, but I figured his friends would want to know.

Now that's something.
I'm not surprised you can't do it here. Anything "ordinary" people can't do seems to be taken away, as a rule.
What if you got some practice fighting on your own?

My friend had started teaching me some things, but, well, I've never been very good with fighting. I wouldn't mind learning more, especially if I'm going to be a player eventually.

It's actually a relief I don't have to deal with shadows. It sucks when you have to feel someone else's misery every time you need to eat.
