Bookstore:
[The bookstore is a mess. He's struggling to keep up. But he's still got a smile on his face. Yes, he's one of those people that enjoys retail, suck it.]

Infirmary:
[After his day of work, he's exhausted. He goes to the infirmary, and drops heavily into his chair. He picks up a clipboard and goes over the data. Lately he's had to deal with a lot of students getting sick. He needs to run some more tests to try and find the cause. He got up again, and went to some of his equipment in the back of the room. He was not going to be beaten by this puzzle.]

I was expecting it to come alive.

Well, there's several different approaches I've heard of.
There's modern embalming, that involves draining the body of fluids and some chemical preservation techniques.
Then there's several ancient techniques I've read about but they all involve removal of organs or other bodily fluids.

Only one, and only exists in a theoretical sense on this campus.

I'm a vampire. Up until a certain point, bodies can be reanimated as vampires.

And my master has developed a procedure that changes a vampire's DNA back into its human state. Which again, has a certain timeframe limit.
The limitation there is obvious. Genetic therapy is not my area of expertise, and I have only absorbed certain parts of his work. Without us getting lucky enough that he arrives here, it would be nearly impossible for me to replicate it.

Being alive and a vampire would be better than dead, even if your boyfriend never showed up to reverse the process.

But do your abilities even still work here?

He's not my boyfriend. He's hundreds of years old, and has created a new race of extrahumanoid beings. He's taught me everything I know. And my brother and I would probably both be dead right now if it weren't for him.[Can you tell that's a soft spot?]

And further from that, I'm quite straight, despite what the pink sneakers might lead you to believe.

Everything else about me does. I've only turned someone once, and I wasn't exactly in my right mind then. I'm so young of a vampire, I'm practically an infant.

You sound pretty defensive for what was an offhand comment, but all right.

Interesting. I wonder if it might not be a bad idea, then.
All I know about vampires I've learned from fiction, because they don't exist in my universe.
I assume you require blood to survive. What else sets you apart from humans?

That's not the I'm-not-gay kind of defensive, that's this-isn't-BDSM defensive.

I can take a fair amount more damage than your average human, and your classical weaknesses do apply, sometimes to a greater or lesser extent than the stories said. Garlic is generally a disgusting thing to be around, and silver can actually poison a vampire's blood. I have a predator's senses, and I usually remember people by their scent than by how they look or what they wear. I can move quicker than the average human, but I'm nowhere near as fast as my brother or far older vampires than myself.

Fair enough. That's actually something I can get behind being defensive about.

I see. How about sunlight?

It hurts, but it's something I can cope with. Think of it as a really awful sunburn that you get as soon as you step into direct sunlight.

That would really complicate things. I think we'd better save this for a last resort.

What about cryogenics? Is that a thing as far as you're concerned?

I'm not aware of any incidents of humans being successfully revived after being frozen.

Makes sense.

Until I have an opportunity to do some more research, I think we might have to try to talk the cafeteria staff into allowing us to store it in their cooler.

Right. That would at least slow the rate of decomposition.

I'm afraid I'll have to back burner you until I find out what the source of this food poisoning outbreak on campus is.

Yeah, I understand. Needs of the many.
Do you have any leads on that, by the way?

[bloodbrother]

Everyone's diets vary by a lot, so I haven't been able to pinpoint it to a specific source aside from cafeteria food. I have a lot of samples still to analyze, though.
