After the morning battles Clara assembled the group. "Today you will be hiking." She held up a pile of maps, each had a colour band on the back. "Get your teams colour and a compass. You will follow the map to the three check points marked, if you have any questions come and ask me before you set off. Weapons; the backpacks are over there, they have supplies for the day including first aid kits.
"I expect to see you at the first check point by 1pm, the second by 4pm and the final one at 7pm. Don't be late."
She waited around in case anyone had questions, but her pointed look made it clear that they were expected to set off soon.
Suzaku took the map and the compass with a nod and went over to the rucksacks to look for Vane. He figured once they were out of sight of Clara they could share the load, he knew very little about the man who was now his Weapon but he recognised pain when he saw it and didn't wish to make it worse.
Slowly getting the hang of not overdressing to compensate for weather elements that weren't present, today Vane was only wearing his scarf and a light jacket over his t-shirt. Clothing that made him feel unreasonably nervous despite the (in his opinion) good weather. As Suzaku approached, Vane was debating putting his medication- a strange, stainless steel-esque cylindrical object that seemed to have a button at the top and a series of clear, thin vials in a pill-like sheet- into his bag.
Would it be any use? Or should he toss the extra weight into the woods now and save himself the frustration?
Suzaku looked at the objects Vane was holding, he didn't recognise the cylindrical object at all but the vials were recognisable enough. "What's that?"
Startled at the youth's silent approach, Vane glanced over his shoulder and hesitantly lowered the items, seemingly debating trying to hide them and realizing there was little point in doing so now. After a moment, he shrugged and offered them to Suzaku for his inspection.
The cylinder, though with the appearance of stainless steel, was much lighter in weight and- if he pushed the button- revealed it was something akin to a syringe. There was a small part on the body that- when twisted- revealed that the casing could be moved aside to show a small slot where the vials could be slipped in. By appearance alone, its purpose was fairly obvious and idiot-proof. The problem then was that Vane kept forgetting the instant he figured out how to properly use the items.
"I have a small condition." He explained quietly, appearing uncomfortable. "This medication is supposed to help with it but... well, I can't seem to recall how to inject it."
It wasn't actually that different than equiptment he had seen back on his world, though some of that wasn't actually for human use. "That is a dangerous memory to loose." That they would go that far... but really Suzaku wasn't that surprised.
"Yes, but it's no different from anyone else." Vane replied with a shrug, dismissing the other's concern with a soft smile. It was a look meant to encourage the other, an attempt to disarm concern which- he was beginning to learn- was practically impossible with his young partner.
At Suzaku's suggestion, a part of Vane went very still. He wasn't used to depending on others and some corner of his mind loathed the very suggestion. For a moment his mistrust of others and his practicality waged war inside his mind, but only a brief moment before his practical side won out. With a small sigh, Vane rolled up his sleeve and presented the inside of his wrist where dark dots signified injection points. He had at least been able to deduce that much.
"I suppose this is part of trusting your player." He remarked wryly, before giving Suzaku a calm look. "Please, I'd appreciate it."
It was though, Suzaku thought. After all forgetting how to tie your shoes was harmless compared to forgetting how to take important medicine, and some peoples memories seemed more dangerous than others. He waited quietly while Vane decided, checking the supplies and the map. It wasn't much different than an army exercise so Suzaku wasn't too worried.
"I guess," He nodded and took the cylindar, it was pretty easy to work out, after pressing the button and taking a moment to figure out where everything went. "Alright I think this is correct..."
Vane held still as he watched Suzaku, wincing slightly when he felt the syringe puncture skin. Fingers curling slightly in reflex to the unexpected pain, he breathed slowly through his mouth as a familiar cooling sensation spread through his body from his wrist, carried by the blood. When the chill hit his chest, for a moment he had to struggle to breathe as his lungs seemed to not want to obey him. Like the cold had slowed every organ inside his body.
Then it was gone, as if nothing had ever happened with only a small drop of blood on his skin to signify the use of the syringe. Though his arm felt weak, probably because of the injection, he was already feeling better. Especially now that the pain in his chest had completely faded away.
Slowly taking a deep breath, this time the smile he gave Suzaku was much warmer. "Thank you, you're a lifesaver."
Suzaku was a little worried at the reaction but a moment later Vane seemed fine and Suzaku nodded. "Don't worry about it. How often do you need them?"
He would make sure he got the medicine when it was needed, even when this trip was over. It was wrong of this place to force him to forget such things.
"As needed is the general rule but once a day usually does the trick." Vane replied as he wiped at the drop of blood before rolling his sleeve back down. "I believe the maximum number of injections per day is two, it's a pretty potent painkiller." He added.
"So if you could do this for me before we set out for the day activities this week, I shouldn't slow you down anymore."
Suzaku nodded, "I don't wish you to be in any pain, so if you need a second injection please tell me." He put the needle back in the pack. "Are you ready?"
"I'll let you know if the situation changes." Vane replied with sincerity in his voice as he finished zipping up his bag before shouldering it. The movement was smooth and clean, not hindered by the pain that had been plaguing him thus far.
