What's 'Youkai'?

Oh, basically man-eating supernatural people. The humans fight against them in duels to keep from getting eaten, but that only started recently.

Wow...do you have to defend yourself from them a lot?

[You're human, right?]

Not really. Youkai usually look human, too. Wings and such are dead giveaways that you're dealing one, though.

Either way, I don't get to deal with 'em too much.

I'm glad. That sounds terrifying.

Well, sure, for most humans. Marisa isn't really afraid of anything, I think. She's number one when it comes to incident resolution, and even gave me a heads up about everything going screwy a few days ago. Haven't seen her at all, though...

[Gotta be here somewhere, right?]

I'm sure she's fine. People get sidetracked and hide out all the time.

I mean like at all at all, not even once in the couple weeks I've been here.

She...may be gone, then...

Come to think of it, the message was really unlike her. I guess there could be some other Marisa here, but we've never met if that's true.

Weird...this place has all sorts of strange things happen, though.

What kinds of things? It's probably a bad move to expect the same thing twice, but I want to know what kinds of things I've missed.

Missing memories, people dissappearing, people getting their memories completely wiped...

[ferriedmemories]

...Those don't sound like exciting things. You don't have to tell me more if you don't want to but amnesia is never fun.

You're telling me. My brother doesn't remember me at all, and I have no idea who my other brother is.

Well, at least he's here. I know a couple people from home, but they're all in Conquest.

You have no idea how it is to walk up to one of your best friends and be treated like a stranger, do you?

It was that bad? Was the Lethe River involved or something?

[This was terrible! It meant one less person cared about her! That meant she would have less money when she died. And that was the important thing.]

I don't know anything about any rivers, but my best friend has not a single clue who I am or that he even had a friend or any other references to me. Everything's been deleted.

Everything to do with me. Every way I touched his life, every everything where we interacted. Gone. He didn't even know he'd forgotten me, because he didn't know there was a me to forget.

[Just then, it clicks. This was the person that had disappeared when she arrived.

The person she was now sleeping in the same room with.

The revelation floors her, leaving her temporarily unable to say anything, just lie back and stare at the clouds.]
