Dining Hall

[Yuki is in the dining hall with the rule book in front of her and a plate of food on her left. On her right is a note book where she is diligently taking notes.]

[Your name is in the book. She has a list of the players, weapons, playerless weapons, battles, outcomes, stats, everything she could possibly need in the future. Don't be creeped out, it's necessary]

[mumbling]
I don't understand...

Er... [What is she supposed to say? Would they all remember this when they went home? If they did, what were the consequences of being honest? Would it matter?]

India? [... No, anyone could tell she hadn't been speaking the full truth, not when what came out was a question. Even if it was, technically, true.]

It's far away, you wouldn't recognize it. Everything's... quite different from where you're from, I'm quite sure. [Oh great... She had to resist the urge to groan and bury her face in her hands. She was bad at lying, but not telling the truth wasn't working either.]

[This, Grenn felt no hesitation for.]

Arabic, Chinese, passable Spanish and a bit of English. Lyra's teaching me... [Grenn trails off, and feels a slightly goofy smile on her face, while her stomach heats. She really hopes what the receptionist said about time holds...]

[Grenn's not too sure how much she should say, but since this is part of the school and not her background, she doesn't really see any problem.]

And I'm rather sure I'm speaking Arabic right now... and you Japanese. Right? We're being translated.

[Grenn pauses, looks around. Rebalances the tray of food she has on her lap.]

Not sure how they're doing it... Ought to be impossible. This sort of intuitive, multiple-langauge translation... [She cuts herself off in time, but the complete thought would have been 'isn't even possible where I'm from'.]

[Grenn shakes her head.]

There's been... [A pause. The tiniest wince. There she almost went again.]

I'm quite sure it's not possible. Though with this sort of holographic technology... and I don't understand where that is coming from either... Who knows what they're capable of.

[Seriously... Space-time manipulation, maybe even dimensional, considering there's some differences in the history she knows and what was taken up at the history lesson she peeked into. She didn't even think multpiple dimensions were possible!]

[Grenn narrows her eyes, then briefly looks around.]

Who knows... But... Well. Something like a condensed time-space? I don't know. But you'd need it to be limited, so it's easier to control. But how that would negate people's, er... abilities, if they have them..?

[Grenn shakes her head and shrugs. Metaphysical universe theories wasn't something Grenn had taken much stock in. But they'd been taught the basics of the current theories.][Unless whoever in charge was equivalent to a bored deity. Making people play a strange game may constitute an afternoon's fun, perhaps? ... Where was these ideas even coming from, anyway? Grenn shakes her head again, trying to dislodge the silly thoughts.]

[This conversation is fascinating.

Not that Sherlock is paying any obvious attention from his place at a nearby table. But he doesn't seem to be doing anything else, either.]

[So other people have... Grenn's momentarily distracted by where Yuki is looking, and frowns. Maybe it doesn't matter.][... Time to make a decision, perhaps.]

And if I told you that the history lesson yesterday doesn't match up with what little I know of the period they were talking about?

[She's not sure she likes that guy sitting over there. He doesn't appear to be listening, but still...]
bitofafiction: Looking up. Considering or evasive. (<= I know it sounds absurd)

[personal profile] bitofafiction 2011-01-08 10:33 pm (UTC)(link)
[Caught by one participant, but not the other. Sherlock continues to give no outward sign of his interest.]

[Casting another frown over at Sherlock, Grenn shrugs and leans forward a bit. She has no idea if this ought to be kept secret, but, well, she's read one or two books about broken timelines because someone said something they shouldn't have...]

Well... I have to admit I don't know much about that time in history. [Grenn pauses and shrugs. Lowers her voice just a bit.]

But, well. With history that ancient, they just don't go in on particulars. [She's not sure she should say more than that, even if they apparently come from slightly different... versions? of reality.]
bitofafiction: Smiling: fond amusement. (!= that was Victorian)

[personal profile] bitofafiction 2011-01-09 08:15 pm (UTC)(link)
[Still listening, he smiles to himself. What was it he was saying to Yuki earlier? Ah, yes: curiouser and curiouser...]
summerstars: (hmm)

[personal profile] summerstars 2011-01-09 09:37 pm (UTC)(link)
[Grenn looks down, realizes she has food on her plate, and takes time to take a few bites before putting the utensils down again. What to say? How to say it?][Well, Grenn isn't actually sure she's going to be able to explain properly anyway...]

It's year 326, soon 327... after a particular event, but I'm not actually sure how much time there's between the old calendar and the new one... Dates were never my favourite. [Grenn finishes in an apologetic tone, now more or less whispering.]

[Of course, she used the new calendar quite knowingly... if that guy over there is listening, and she's not sure either way, he's not going to be able to tell anything from those dates. She could have used the Hijri calendar, but then the exact dates could have been figured out, for those who knew that way of keeping time.]</small

[That guy over there remains apparently oblivious. Apparently.]

[personal profile] summerstars 2011-01-11 09:02 am (UTC)(link)
[Grenn drags a hand over her face, and doesn't know what to do. Does she tell, or would that break timelines or whatever?]

I'm not sure I should... what if that changes something? [But she wants to explain something, and if Yuki doesn't know the exact dates of when the new calendar was instated, or how long it had been between the past she probably inhabited and the future when that event happened...]

[Of course, if they simply come from different realities, it probably doesn't matter, but Grenn's aware the difference in history could simply be things forgotten between then and now.]

What happened was... [Then she snaps her mouth shut. Looks around. It's not just that guy over there in here, even if none of the others are even potetntially close.]

[So she takes out her pencil and notebook, and hopes the translation works for text, too; First permanent expedition landing on Mars. Finished, Grenn gives the notebook to Yuki. She doesn't mention the terraforming.]
bitofafiction: Looking up. Considering or evasive. (<= I know it sounds absurd)

[personal profile] bitofafiction 2011-01-11 10:08 pm (UTC)(link)
[Which leaves Sherlock free to speculate on just what she might have written down.]
summerstars: (smile)

[personal profile] summerstars 2011-01-12 09:45 pm (UTC)(link)
[Giving a decisive nod, Grenn closes the notebook again, and puts it and the pencil away.]

Really. That deserves its own calendar, don't you think? [Grenn says with a smile. It's kinda funny, she wouldn't be born for forever when that expedition happened, but she still feels kinda proud, in the face of Yuki's surprise.]

What date is it to you? I mean, before you ended up here? [Grenn has to admit to being curious, about the relative time difference. Of course, that says nothing about what time (if there is any) they're in right now, here...]
bitofafiction: Eyes closed, serene, content. (<= it's good to be home)

[personal profile] bitofafiction 2011-01-15 02:35 am (UTC)(link)
[Now there's some information Sherlock is interested in hearing.]
