It makes sense to start with the alphabet though. Maybe words like thank you, you're welcome, yes, no, hello, and goodbye as well.

we do have certain ways to greet
we need to be able to sign certain words and phrases quickly
as helpful as the alphabet is
signing entire sentences with just that is just a pain
