Monday: Astronomy class

Summary: OUTER SPACE. In theory, anyway.

For now, Golbez was going to teach astronomy. He had put together a vague lesson plan from the textbook he'd borrowed from the school library and was going to wing it, more or less. He didn't know nearly enough about Rakuen or Exaclan to fight against it yet, and in any case he could hardly do it on his own; he would have to bide his time and work together with the other "teachers" and "students", and in the meantime, the best option was to play along with the system.

As soon as the students were settled, he spoke up to start the class. "This is astronomy class," he said simply. "If you haven't yet obtained a textbook from the library, you should get one after classes end for the day. We'll start out reading about the inner solar system, and assuming we haven't found a way out of this city by the time we finish, we'll then move on to the outer planets."

"Are there any questions?"

[Lithuania looks rather nervous at the idea of reading out of a textbook.]

The book isn't in the computers, is it?

[stoppedhiding]

No. It's a physical book. [ He holds up his own copy. A book on a computer... That's an interesting idea. ]

[duchy]

[Estonia was telling him about books on computers; Lithuania was hoping this would be the case. He frowns.]

Um... Is all the reading out of class?

[stoppedhiding]

Most of it will be in class, but if you'd like to read ahead out of class, you may.

[ Pause. ]

Why?

[duchy]

Um.

[Shifting awkwardly in his chair.]

Where I'm from, most people don't know how to read. So...

[stoppedhiding]

... "Most people" -- including yourself?

[duchy]

[Shy nod.]

I'm learning, and I can have someone read to me outside of class...

[stoppedhiding]

[ Think. He could give the boy permission to skip out of the class, but Day seems the type to punish first, ask questions later. So as awkward as his next idea is, it's the best one he has. ] I can read the required passages to you, if you'd like.

[duchy]

I-if it's not taking too much time out of class?

[Hopeful!]

[stoppedhiding]

...Very well. Obtain the textbook by tomorrow morning.

[duchy]

[Beaming.]

I will! Thank you very much, Sir.

[imperceptible]

[Slumped over his desk in that peculiar way most students who are tired most often do, Kevin raises his hand listlessly.]

Any chance we can plan our escape strategy instead?

[stoppedhiding]

I wouldn't object, as long as you're prepared for the possible repercussions.

[imperceptible]

What, like detention?

[stoppedhiding]

Our "headmistress" has the ability to induce incapacitating pain at will. I would not be surprised if that were only a small amount of the power she and the school's "prefect" wield.

[imperceptible]

You think they'll use torture? [O... kay, that's a little more morbid than he thought.]

[stoppedhiding]

I do.

[imperceptible]

Geezus... What is the friggin' point of any of this?

[stoppedhiding]

[ Wouldn't it be nice if they knew that. ]

In any case, I will leave the decision of what to discuss during classtime to all of you.

[imperceptible]

I'd still wanna try but... [Not so concealed glance at the rest of the class.] Don't wanna speak for everyone else. Can I see you after class?

[stoppedhiding]

[ He nods. ] Very well. If anybody else should care to discuss the subject as well, stay after class is over.

[ Logically, no harm should come of discussing non-class-related subjects outside of class. But who knows just how logical the school's administration is? ]

[imperceptible]

[Good, with that taken care of, the itch of doing something scratched, Kevin leans back and tries to pay attention to the class.


... and falls asleep about 20 minutes in. Whoops.]

Suzaku sat near the back, he knew nothing about astronomy and school had never been his strong suit. Mainly because there had been so much time missed in his education. He raised his hand though.

"Is there a specific textbook we need?"

[stoppedhiding]

He glances down at the textbook resting on his desk. "Introduction to our Solar System," he replied. It had seemed the most basic of the astronomy books offered in the library.

Suzaku nodded, he had learnt the very basics of the Solar System as a child but, he realised with a shock. Here in this very different world it might not even be the same Solar System.

He wrote down the name of the book anyways, so he could find it in the library. "Thank you sir."
