Conquest Round Five

Just like every week before there are announcements on every board, "Please report to the lobby at 12 noon for assembly." Anyone who get lost or try not to attend are dragged there by Santana.

And really, there is good reason not to go. Anyone who has seen the battle records for this week and can count will know that Conquest has lost. Anyone who was in the city two weeks ago, knows how Day feels about losing.

This time Day isn't just annoyed she is livid. Thanks to the attack on her person on Friday night. Adding that to the fact conquest had lost again. She is stood on the stage with Santana, Flynn, Feferi and Gino. When everyone is gathered she glares at them and starts talking, hitting anyone who doesn't shut up with a warning penalty.

"You lost. Again." She wasn't smiling, she wasn't even holding anything to eat in her hand, she meant business this time. "What is wrong with you? You lose by one round winner. If just one more of you had won the round, and really how hard is it? You would have won!"

She glared at them and everyone who had been players the last round would begin to get a headache that built. "I don't care about your excuses, I don't care if you tried your best. You lost. You are pathetic and you will work harder this round. You will work harder or you will be sorry."

The battle records appeared behind her. "Do I need to even go through them? Will hearing about how you losers failed make you fail less?"

"Golbez and Suzaku Kururugi, Golbez won," she shot a blast of penalty towards Suzaku, sharper and more violent then the ones she had used the last time they had lost. He buckled and she smirked. "Suzaku Kururugi and Sis Strider, Sis won." Another stab of pain, "Golbez and Tear, Tear lost but since she is incacipated in the infirmary due to Golbez's win I will deem that punishment enough. Congratulations Golbez, you put a fairy in a coma!" She actually sounded impressed.

Her mocking grin faded and she continued, "Our head Prefect Santana Lopez fought this round, winning both times of course. Congratulations Santana, Golbez, Suzaku Kururugi, I guess it's applaudable that you even tried." She still hit them with penalties though.

"Onto the battles that truly matter, against Fortitude." The page changed, "Suzaku Kururugi won against Sadaharu Inui, Cirno lost against Jade Harley," Here Cirno would get the stab of pain, only lasting a few moments but painful enough to make her stumble.

"Suzaku Kururugi lost against Spain, Golbez lost against Nanashi and Spain." More pain as she pressed onwards, Tear won against Nanashi and Sadaharu Inui, Suzaku Kururugi won against Spain, but lost against Dave Strider and Jade Harley. Are thirteen year olds too difficult to beat?" More pain went his way, "Cirno lost against Marisa Kirisame," and her way also, "Yuki Yagizawa and Sis Strider both beat Dave."

"Finally Santana Lopez won against Jade Harley, which is no surprise, well done Santana."The records disapeared from behind her and she shook her head, "Yuku Yagizawa and Sis Strider both won the round. I can only hope the next group follow do better."

With that the next round players came up on the screan and she read them out.

"Kotaro Mochizuki
John Egbert
Flynn Scifo
Brienne of Tarth
Lemina Ausa"

Usually this is where the assembly ended but this time Day raised her hand, gesturing people to stay still. Her eyes glinted dangerously.

"Losing the round, as bad as it is. Is not what has made me angry today." Okay it was a big part of what had made her angry, but, "On Friday evening I was attacked, in my office. We have told you time and time again, it is not our fault you are here, taking your anger out on us is not necessary or smart." Her eyes glinted again, "I have my suspicions as to who my attacker is, and they will learn. That disobedience is met with punishment. That I cannot be threatened, and it is unwise to try."

At that she turned to Flynn and he crumpled, her and Satana focussed the warning penalty on him. The pain would be too much for him to stand or talk. It lasted for ten minutes, anyone who moved or talked was hit with a warning penalty strong enough to sink them to their knees.

When it was over she stepped away from Flynn, who was curled up on the floor. It would be a few moments before he had the strength to stand. "Dismissed."

Sherlock glanced at her, almost as though he were doing a a double take, then looked at her for another second or so before seeming to lose interest.

"You really shouldn't open your mouth," he said, turning his attention back to the front of the room, where a trio of people had now helped the blonde to his feet. "It's profoundly unattractive."

Lemina gaped. Had he really just--

"Why, you little...! Here I am trying to help you! Who do you think you are?! Fine, go after that psychopath, see if I care what happens to you!"

Sherlock turned, sharply, and suddenly his face was very close to Lemina's, his pale blue eyes locking firmly on hers.

"My name is Sherlock Holmes, and I am the world's only consulting detective. And you..."

His eyes flicked over her quickly--

"...have an overblown fondness for material things but clearly no appreciation of monetary value. Your dress is in terrible condition, so you either haven't had time or haven't had the finances to do anything about it--your hair is brushed, indicating vanity, but it's hardly been styled and your fingernails support the theory that it is the former. You're used to carrying something in your right hand--normally I'd suggest an umbrella, but I'd say it's something larger, and you feel exposed because it isn't there because you cover that side slightly when you face people. And that's not even mentioning the shoes--altogether not a very impressive girl; I really do suggest you keep in mind that suggestion about keeping your mouth shut. At least until you can get a nicer dress."

He raised his eyebrows, his lips pressing together into a strange, almost comically tight-mouthed expression--almost as though he were defying her to tell him he was wrong.

Lemina drew back when Sherlock got up in her face, glaring at first and showing absolutely no signs of recognition at the name Sherlock Holmes, but as he talked she grew progressively more and more irritated with him. What kind of person got away with saying this kind of thing?

No appreciation of monetary value? Oh, it was on.

"You have no idea who you're talking to, do you? I'm the premiere of the magic guild of Vane! I'd like to see you go up against an evil god and come out of it with your clothes and nails in perfect shape, you mega jerk!" As she spoke, she clenched her fists and brought her right hand up to rest on her chest, confirming Sherlock's observation that she was uncomfortable without her staff.

"Maybe I look like a peasant right now, but I can fix that by buying some new clothes. You're going to stay a creep forever. And probably one without any magical ability, at that!" She looked as though she'd said something that should make any person with a shred of self-worth crumple into a heap of despair. Whoops, she doesn't remember that people without magic are still people too. Thanks, Rakuen.

Unfortunately, he did not collapse into a despondant heap. Sherlock didn't even react, really; he just watched, eyebrows raised as she railed uselessly: it would take quite a lot more than calling Sherlock Holmes a 'creep' to faze him.

By the time she finished, though, he looked positively bored. "Are you done? Excellent! I have better things to do, and I'm afraid arguing with magicians is a bit beneath me." He flashed her a brief, fake smile, and moved to brush past her.

What was with the way he said that? Like he thought he was better than someone who could use magic?

Lemina scoffed, crossing her arms. "And here I was going to offer you a way to redeem yourself. Whatever! Go get tortured by that Day woman, but don't come crawling back to me. I'll just say I told you so!"

(Perhaps her retorts were a bit outdated. She is, in a sense, a product of the nineties.)

Wrong!

Sherlock turned on his heel, turning again to face her; it involved leaning forward slightly, his eyes once again roaming over her before it stopped0-finally--on her face and then her eyes.

"And why," he began, "should I need to redeem myself?"

She turned her nose in the air in a haughty gesture. "You're speaking to a superior. Like I said, I'm the premiere of the ancient and noble magic guild of Vane. And you haven't shown me a single ounce of respect!"

She opened one eye to glance at him, then continued. "But if you wanted to, I'd be willing to accept you as a Weapon. I could use another one, and I'm sure I'd be a good influence on you."

Sherlock stood there, staring at her, for a long time. An abnormally long time--especially for him, as anything over two or three seconds was generally 'long.' This was about five.

There were several things going on in his head--dozens and dozens of things; he immediately came up with forty-six ways to tell her no, and it was very tempting to use one of them. On the first count, of course, she was a tedious, obnoxious, boring person and he really had no interest in having anything further to do with her. On the second and third and fourth and fifth and so on, however... Sherlock was markedly unfamiliar with the rituals and rhythms of this place--the so-called battles and schools and suchnot and suchwith--he'd had no interest in any of it, of course, but now...

Well, he couldn't deny a gossamer thread of interest. Not in the battles themselves, but in the angle it would give him. It would be very much to his advantage to get a bit closer to that Day woman, to get a look at all of her and her little details--not just her dramatic presentation in front of her captive audience, where he couldn't even get a good look at her without several dozen people in the way, but a good close study, and taking an active role in these wargames certainly seemed to get her attention. Perhaps he could use this to his advantage. And...

"You don't know what kind of weapon I am," he observed calmly.

He hadn't said no. So there was a possibility he might say yes. Really, part of her just wanted to get back at him for being such a jerk, and what better way to do that than to literally own him as property? Not that she'd do anything too awful to him... But on the other hand, it really would be better to have more than just Arthur's sword handy, and another weapon meant five more raks.

"Okay, so what kind of weapon are you?" Actually, if he was another sword, she'd probably take back her offer and just ditch him right then and there.

"A whaling harpoon." He was still utterly calm, his blue eyes watching her for the minutest details of reaction.
pennypincher: (Uh-oh)

[personal profile] pennypincher 2012-03-11 04:53 am (UTC)(link)
"...Huh." A harpoon... She'd never used one before, but that would be a long-range weapon, wouldn't it? Which gave it an edge over a sword. Lemina rubbed her chin in thought. "Yeah, I'll still take you. How hard can it be?"

Good.

Excellent, even. Sherlock felt--for the first time since he'd gotten here--a faint bubble of excitement. He had something to do--a plan and a goal and a purpose. This was better. Not ideal, but better. The increase in energy was visible in his posture, and he rubbed his hands together slightly.

"I'm refuse to be idle," he informed her--almost a warning. "If we make this agreement, you're going to have to fight."

pennypincher: (ilu!)

[personal profile] pennypincher 2012-03-11 10:23 pm (UTC)(link)
"No problem," she replied with a grin. "I'm planning to make Conquest win this round, and I can't do that without fighting."

She thrust a hand up into the air excitedly. "Congratulations! You're now the property of one Lemina Ausa. You couldn't have asked for a better Player, believe you me!"

Oh, I'm sure I could.

Sherlock's smile was tight-lipped and ingratiating, but not too obviously so--he could be a great pretender, when he wanted to be.

Now all he--they--needed to do was win.

And he had just the plan for when they did.
